On June 25, 2015, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (“OSHA”) created a new compliance nightmare for inpatient health care facilities and nursing homes. Specifically, Dorothy Dougherty, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health, announced the details of OSHA’s new health care enforcement initiative in a memorandum to OSHA Regional Administrators and State Plans.
VanishPoint® Blood Collection Set
The VanishPoint® Blood Collection Set, from Retractable Technologies, Inc., features automated in-vein retraction that effectively reduces the risk of needlestick injuries and blood exposure.  The safety mechanism is activated by depressing a retraction trigger that is located near the finger-grip area.  This allows for easy one-handed activation, without changes in hand position, while reducing the risk of inadvertent activation.  The needle is retracted directly from the patient, virtually eliminating exposure to the contaminated needle.

IN THE NEWS
IS IT OK TO CONSIDER HOW EXPENSIVE SAFETY DEVICES COST WHEN PICKING SAFETY SHARPS FOR YOUR FACILITY?
NO!!! The cost of a product cannot be taken into consideration.  You need the device your staff feels the safest using!  The healthcare industry was issued 796 citations for violations of the Bloodborne Pathogens standard and facilities were fined $1,002,216.  About 70 violation abd $79,000 in fines were recorded under the General Requirements standard, which requires PPE in the workplace. Your facility most likely won't get an OSHA inspector - with only 2,000 inspectors available for millions of workplaces nationwide.   But when they do inspect, it is usually because an employee called in a complaint!

Do you have an active program to evaluate and use safety sharps and needeles? OSHA does not specificly recommend any particular product but encourages healthcare workplaces to use safety devices designed to cap themselves with safety sheaths or with retractable needles.   The law requires healthcare faciliie to evaluate new shaps safety devices annually.

IS IT OK TO QUESTION YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT HAND WASHING?
I recently had an appointment with a medical specialist. I got called into the clinic room where I waited for the doctor; and I noticed a few "wash your hands" posters. When he came in, I swear he didn't use the hand sanitizer. I couldn't be sure. And I didn't want to ask -- but I was kind of grossed out. What should I have done? Is it ok to question the doctor about hand washing?
