Needlestick Damage Control 101: Tips for Transitioning to Safety Scalpels -
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act was established in 2000 to address the exposure to bloodborne pathogens resulting from accidental sharps injuries in healthcare and other occupational settings. This act introduced an expansion of OSHA’s requirements for employers to establish programs to identify, evaluate, and implement safer devices and practices. The CDC estimates that approximately 62%-88% of these

Exposures to blood and other body fluids occur across a wide variety of occupations. Health care workers, emergency response and public safety personnel, and other workers can be exposed to blood through needlestick and other sharps injuries, mucous membrane, and skin exposures. The pathogens of primary concern are the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), and hepatitis C virus (HCV). Workers and employers are urged to take advantage of available engineering controls and work practices to prevent exposure to blood and other body fluids.
Punctur-Guard Blood Collection Needle
The Punctur-Guard Blood Collection Needle is designed to work with any standard blood collection tube holder on the market and offers a unique internal blunting technology that is integral to the needle itself. This device blunts while inside the patient's vein, eliminating exposure to the sharp upon needle exit. In a study performed by Morbidity and Mortality Weekly, the Punctur-Guard Blood Collection Needle reduced needle sticks by 76%; the highest rate of any device studied!

Source of used syringes baffling
The large number of used syringes found in Mohawk Park in recent weeks has caught everyone off guard, says Ward 5 Coun. Brian Van Tilborg.

"I've lived in the area all my life, went to Pauline Johnson Collegiate and participated in cleanups down there," Van Tilborg said. "We've found used needles down there before but never this many over so many weeks.

"Usually, it's a one-off -- you do a cleanup, collect some needles and move on but that's not been the case in recent weeks."

Several cleanup efforts have taken place since mid-April and each time a large quantity of used syringes has been collected from the Mohawk Lake shoreline. In that time more than 100 used syringes have been plucked from the shoreline, including 50 that were found by the Grand River Environmental Group during a 90-minute cleanup on the weekend.

VanishPoint® Blood Collection Set
The VanishPoint® Blood Collection Set, from Retractable Technologies, Inc., features automated in-vein retraction that effectively reduces the risk of needlestick injuries and blood exposure.  The safety mechanism is activated by depressing a retraction trigger that is located near the finger-grip area.  This allows for easy one-handed activation, without changes in hand position, while reducing the risk of inadvertent activation.  The needle is retracted directly from the patient, virtually eliminating exposure to the contaminated needle.

HAND-OFF SUCCESS: 5 STRATEGIES FOR A SINGLE HAND-OFF TOOL
Redundant information gathering, home-grown documentation tools in each phase of perioperative care, and siloed patient information was limiting successful perioperative patient hand-offs at Northside Hospital-Forsyth in Cumming, Ga.

“Our number one complaint among staff nurses was the inconsistent quality of the patient report between phases of care,” explains Rebecca Roe, BSN, CNOR, clinical development specialist for surgical services at Northside Hospital-Forsyth.

Previous attempts to address hand-off inefficiencies led to individual nurses from different phases of perioperative care developing their own tools for patient information gathering; however, this only increased the height of silos between periop care areas, which had reached sky-scraper status, adds Chad Herndon, RN, CNOR, perioperative clinician.

CHECKCLIP MEDICATION LABELING
The Qlicksmart CheckCLIP is a medication labe
lling device which allows clinicians to draw up the drug with both the syringe and ampoule remaining in their hands at all times, which reduces the risk of both syringe swap and ampoule swap errors. The CheckCLIP is simple and quick to use, enabling a clear visual cross-checking of the medication details without obstructing the incremental dosage markings on the syringe. This significantly improves the tracking and identification of medications, and assists in compliance of the Five Rights of medication administration. Healthcare workers around the world have already embraced this highly-effective and cost-savings safety solution.

THE STATE OF HAND HYGIENE 2017: DO WE NEED A BUNDLE?
Hand hygiene has been recognized for more than 150 years as the single most effective method of preventing healthcare associated infections (HAI). And yet, for the past several decades, compliance has been reported by published accounts to have remained on average, less than 50 percent. There has been success in reducing HAI of multiple types according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) HAI Progress report, though zero infections in any category is still an aspirational goal. And there have been published accounts of localized projects employing a variety of approaches resulting in improved hand hygiene. Yet sustained nationwide improvement in hand hygiene compliance has remained elusive, even after multiple national guidelines, numerous performance improvement initiatives, and educational program

VACUETTE® VISIO PLUS BLOOD COLLECTION NEEDLE

The VACUETTE® VISIO PLUS Blood Collection Needle with optical venipuncture control is a great help for phlebotomy personnel. The latest innovation from Greiner Bio-One at last brings vision to blood collection. When venipuncture has been carried out successfully, blood flow is visible in the view window in the transparent plastic hub of the needle.

The VISIO PLUS also has advantages for the patient. Movement in the vein during penetration whilst searching for the vein lumen is sometimes painful for the patient: Due to the visible blood flow in the view window, this movement is avoided. The special cut of the needle tip makes penetration of the tissue a lot easier. The new VACUETTE® VISIO PLUS needle thus guarantees pain-free, stress-free venipuncture.

USED SYRINGES FOUND DURING SPRING CLEANUP A SIGN OF INCREASED DRUG ABUSE IN MEDICINE HA
The recent spring cleanup by volunteers along the highway revealed several used syringes near the Kin Coulee dip. It was the first time crews have had to deal with this type of situation, said Uwe Krickhahn, president of the Rotary Club of Medicine Hat. The increased use of drugs in the community is of paramount concern to, says Insp. Joe West of the Medicine Hat Police Service.  “Drug consumption is always a concern and we work very hard to mitigate that. I think it is something difficult to eliminate,” he said. “As long as there are people consuming those drugs we will find them in the community.”
