NEW RECYCLING PROGRAM FOR SYRINGES, NEEDLES AND CONTAINERS
A facility that processes 100 tons of medical waste per year has developed a new recycling program for syringes, needles and containers for their reuse in the healthcare industry.  Vernon-based Waste Management’s (WM) program seeks to reuse some of the material recycled from about 8 million syringes and needles discarded annually in the United States, while at the same time raising awareness among the millions of people who inject themselves at home about the proper handling of these hazardous waste items.

OCCUPATIONAL SYPHILIS FOLLOWING SCALPEL INJURY
In a recent journal article, Ann Intern Med. 20 March 2012;156(6):475-476:  Previous reports have described many cases of occupational syphilis in health care personnel, but virtually all such reports were published before 1950. In those reports, contact with a mucosal lesion was the most frequent route of transmission, but injuries from sharp devices were also reported to be routes of transmission.

It seems more like a soap opera plot device than something worth worrying about: newborn babies accidentally switched at the hospital. Yet the staff at a Minneapolis hospital recently made such an error and gave a newborn to the wrong mother to be breastfed, a mistake that means the child will need HIV and hepatitis tests every three months for a year.

HEALTHCARE WORKERS MUST PUT THEIR OWN SAFETY FIRST
Whose job is it to take care of the people who take care of others? Think about the pre-flight instructions from a flight attendant: "If you are traveling with a child or someone who requires assistance, secure your mask first, and then assist the other person." You have to take care of yourself first.
