Medical staff contract HIV via unsafe occupational
practices
Bui Trong Hop, head of the Trung Vuong Emergency
Hospital’s Department of Infection Control, said
precautions had not been taken to prevent the
transmission of HIV from patients to medical
workers. Taking blood tests, collecting medical
waste, giving injections, and cleaning tools were
possible paths of transmission, he said. According
to a survey of HCM City hospitals, more than 100
health workers have been infected by HIV due to
occupational accidents since the beginning of the
year.

Pakistan: Hepatitis B, C on rise due to [sic]
contaminated water
Diseases such as Hepatitis B and C are rapidly
spreading in the city due to contaminated water and
unhygienic conditions, a report issued by the
Reality Welfare Organisation (RWO) said on Friday.
The report also said that in October the RWO
gathered 230 blood samples of residents of various
areas of the city, conducted tests of Hepatitis B
and C and found that 15.7 percent results were
positive.
Avian Flu
The deadly H5N1 flu virus disarms the human immune system by hiding bits
of genetic material that would normally trigger an infection alarm,
according to a study published Thursday.
The United States will provide an additional $44.4 million in support of
FAO's avian influenza control and prevention campaign, FAO announced
today. With the new funding from the United States Agency for
International Development (USAID), US support to the FAO avian influenza
program has reached a total of $112.8 million.
A collaboration between Google and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention in Atlanta has yielded an online tool that may help
people know about flu outbreaks even more quickly than existing
surveillance methods.
Thailand's agriculture
ministry confirmed a fresh bird flu outbreak on a farm in the north of
the country six months after that country was declared free of the
virus.
The United States will
contribute another $44.4 million to the United Nations Food and
Agriculture Organization's (FAO's) campaign to prevent and control avian
influenza, the FAO announced today.

The VeinViewer by Luminetx™ uses a combination of
near-infrared light and patented technologies to image vascular structures,
thus allowing physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals to
clearly see accessible vasculature (or lack thereof) in real time, directly
on the surface of the skin.
By imaging the vasculature, clinicians have the ability to visualize the
location of the target area regardless of a patient's age, body type or skin
tone. During prototype development, the device was recognized by Time
Magazine as one of the most innovative medical inventions of 2004.

The VeinViewer incorporates DLP™ Technology from Texas Instruments. But
don't just take our word for it
" The VeinViewer technology has transformed our
ability to deliver compassionate care. With VeinViewer, we have reduced not
only the number of sticks, but also the levels of stress associated with
multiple sticks for the practitioner, the patient and the patient's family."
Joel A. Saltzman, M.D.
Medical Director, Anesthesia
Le Bonheur Children's Hospital

“When we as healthcare practitioners talk in
altruistic terms of patient satisfaction and nursing confidence, the
benefits of the VeinViewer are impossible to quantify. However, the overall
economic benefit to hospitals and clinics with regard to decreased time,
lower material costs and a substantial reduction in the number of needles
needed for venous access is very real and quantifiable.”

Dieble Instrument Organizer
The
Dieble instrument organizer was designed by an LPN surgical technician to
replace the commonly used rolled towel. The organizer allows the efficient
and orderly passing of instruments to and from the surgical field while also
conserving space on the mayo stand and the back table.

In
central supply, the instrument organizer provides a sensible and efficient
way to organize, count and string instruments despite distractions and
interruptions. Instruments can be preassembled and secured directly to the
organizer will by a single stringer rod.

The
organizer is small enough to use on the mayo stand, keeping your instruments
stable and orderly and increasing the speed and efficiency of instrument
transfer during surgery. It also makes it possible for a seamless
changeover of personnel during a case. Adjusting in the organizer is
simple. Instruments can be moved to and from the base with ease by adding,
removing, or sliding the clips from side to side. The Dieble organizer is
designed to support a broad range of instruments and can be quickly adjusted
should there be complications during the case.

No
matter how many instruments are used, it will conserve space on the back
table or mayo stand. The Organizer comes in two sizes. The small adjusts
from 6-10 inches and the large from 12-22. No matter how simple or how
complex the case may be the Dieble organizer is always the right tool for
the job.

There are some people who suffer from an
unreasonable fear of needles. Fair enough ... who
likes needles anyway, you might think. Angeline Lee,
35, is a corporate director. One day, her company
organizes a flu vaccination campaign, providing the
flu jab for free to all staff in her office. On the
day of the vaccination, Angeline secretly sneaks
away from the office. Eventually discovered by her
boss, and on being asked the reason for avoiding
such an important health campaign, she reveals that
she has a compelling fear of needles.

Women's hands have more
kinds of bacteria than men's, study finds
Researchers say our palms hold a greater diversity
of bugs than anyone suspected. But they don't know
why women's hands have roughly 40% more species of
bacteria. For the gender that considers itself the
more fastidious (and has the studies to back up the
claim), women may be chagrined to learn that they
harbor more varieties of germs on their hands than
men do.
In fact, we all -- male
and female -- have whole worlds on our hands, and
they're more diverse than anyone suspected. In a
study published online Monday in the Proceedings of
the National Academy of Science, researchers at the
University of Colorado at Boulder swabbed 102 human
palms and found more than 4,700 species of bacteria.
Species varied from person to person; just five were
shared among all 51 of the study's student
volunteers. They even differed from hand to hand. An
individual's right had different species than the
left.

been infected with the HIV or hepatitis virus.
Living in San Francisco, we take technology for
granted. We have YouTube and iPhones and online
maps. We get annoyed when a Web page downloads too
slow or our phone call drops. Then there are the
millions of people who don't live in developed
countries, who go without the Web and even
electricity and light for most if not all of their
day. For them, things like Windows 7 and Facebook
are irrelevant, but they still dominate the
technology landscape. There are some innovators
designing technology for use by the rest of the
world, companies and nonprofits that are applying
technology to help people improve their lives. The
Tech Museum in San Jose, Calif., offers its Tech
Museum of Innovation awards to projects that apply
technology to benefit humanity.

Real Needlestick and Blood Exposure Stories
I am a nursing
student that is always careful about disposal of sharps, but
one month ago while disposing of a needle I had just use to
help take the glucose level of a HIV+ patient the needle
stuck me. Immediately I took of the gloves wash the area and
squeeze it to see if it will bleed but it didn't, I
inspected the area there was no swelling or signs of
bruising but I knew I felt something. I was immediately
place on antiretrovirals which I discontinued after about
three days because I cant manage the side effects. My HIV
results are negative now but in three months time what will
they be? Its killing me inside, I just want three months to
come so I can retake the test to know if I have it.
I am a registered nurse in the Caribbean I got stuck with a
small bore needle on my thumb early Sunday morning at
work(4days ago) the pt is HIV positive viral load is high it
was through a glove on first glance there was no bleeding
but I squeezed it and wash it with soap and water and pass
spirit swabs on it I went to ER started my prophylaxis
course on antiretroviral which have me very ill I have to
get my first retesting in 6 weeks time
